Oxidative stress is a state of imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body’s ability to neutralize them.
Free radicals are reactive molecules produced in metabolic processes, which, in excess, can damage cells, proteins, lipids and DNA, leading to the development of many diseases, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s) and cancer. Oxidative stress accelerates the aging process and can weaken the functions of the immune system. The body defends itself against the harmful effects of free radicals with antioxidants, which neutralize their excess.
Natural antioxidants include vitamins C and E, minerals such as selenium and zinc, as well as substances of plant origin, including turmeric. Turmeric, or more precisely its active ingredient curcumin, has strong antioxidant properties that help reduce oxidative stress. Curcumin protects cells from damage, supports the health of the heart, brain and immune system. Regularly eating foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits, vegetables and spices (like turmeric), helps the body maintain oxidative balance and protect against the harmful effects of free radicals.
