Physical activity

Useful information regarding exercise, training plans and sports in general.

Physical activity is any form of body movement that leads to the body expending energy. It can take many forms, from everyday activities such as walking, cleaning or gardening, to structured exercises such as running, cycling, swimming or strength training. Physical activity is a key element of a healthy lifestyle, having a beneficial effect on the functioning of the circulatory, respiratory, skeletal and muscular systems. Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy body weight, improves well-being, reduces stress and reduces the risk of many chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise to reap health benefits.

As we age, appropriate levels of activity help maintain physical fitness and improve quality of life.
